Under the conditions of the Partner visa application process, there are generally two discrete stages.

Stage 1

Temporary Partner visa (subclass 820) is usually granted first, allowing you/your partner to remain in Australia until the permanent Partner visa (subclass 801) is processed. For long term relationships (more than three years or two years with children), Stage 1 may be bypassed directly to stage 2 and apply directly for the 801 visa.

Stage 2

Once the permanent Partner visa (subclass 801) is approved, applicants can remain in Australia permanently.
