Advice and support for a Parent visa application
Are you looking to reunite with your parents or relatives in Australia? Many people who have been through their own immigration and permanent residency process understand the significant journey this is. This often leads them to look to bring their parents and other family members to Australia.
The Migration Agency works with each individual to understand their requirements. We’ll work with you to develop a strategy for your parents or family member’s migration journey. For some clients this will include securing a visa for entry and onshore application (if possible) or lodging the application from overseas.
Parents of an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen may be able to migrate to Australia. Criteria which must be satisfied for a visa to be granted in the Parent category include:
- Having a child who is settled in Australia and is an Australian citizen
- Permanent resident or eligible NZ citizen
- Passing the ‘balance of family’ test
- Satisfying certain public interest criteria relating to health and character.
Applicants have two options available to them. The temporary Contributory Parent visas allow parents to live in Australia for up to two years. It is also possible to apply separately for a permanent Contributory Parent visa allowing parents to stay in Australia permanently.
What are the issues with a Parent visa?
These visas are characterised by a substantial application fee to cover medical expenses. Total costs for the permanent Parent visa exceed $40,000 per parent, while the temporary visa cost is less by about half. Parent visa processing time can take up to 18 months.
Generally, a Parent visa must be applied for outside Australia. However, it is possible to apply for an aged parent visa from within Australia. Under these circumstances, at least one of the applicants must be aged 65 or over. If the application is lodged in Australia, the applicants are permitted to remain in Australia on bridging visas while their Parent visa applications are processed.
Before commencing any application for a parent visa, our approach will review your individual situation and provide guidance relating to your migration journey. In our assessment, we will consider all options for addressing your Parent visa application. With the combination of tight constraints of the Australian Migration Program, processing times, and wait time before visa grant consideration, we will advise you as to the likelihood of success before commencing the application.
